What's the difference between a 30-minute and a 90-minute massage? What do I get?
I offer a 30-minute massage because occasionally, clients want to only target a specific muscle group complaint. While a 30-minute full body massage is certainly possible, by the time most clients are relaxed, the massage will be almost over! However, a 30-minute massage should only booked by clients with simple issues of one specific pain/tension complaint of one specific muscle or muscle group, who understand that due to time-constraints, the LMT may not be able to provide an effective or complete full-body massage.

A 60-minute massage is much more versatile. With a 60-minute massage, you can choose to target a specific muscle and group and its associated muscle groups; receive a good, relaxing full-body massage; or introduce our Cupping Therapy and/or Hot Stone Therapy services into your massage!

I also offer a 90-minute massage for clients who oftentimes have difficulty relaxing, for clients who have complex issues that require simultaneous attention to more than one muscle group, for clients that have chronic issues that require longer attention, or for clients who simply want a longer relaxing experience.
In addition, oftentimes during a 60-minute massage, an LMT may have to leave out a few strokes due to time-constraints. However, leaving out strokes like ROM, Vibration, or Nerve Stroke, while still relaxing, can decrease the overall healing effect of a good massage.
A 90-minute massage feels unrushed, complete, and without time-constraints, and turns a "good massage" into a marvelous massage!

Should I tip a massage therapist?

Every massage therapist is different, and it never hurts to ask. Some include a tip rolled into a price. However, if they don't, and you're satisfied with the service received, it's customary to tip 20% for Massage Therapy. At Swan Massage Oasis, our prices DON'T include a tip. However, we never want you to feel
obligated to tip. If you're ever unsatisfied with the service you receive, please let us know and we'll try to make it right!

Last time I got a massage, I was sore and had a headache. What's up with that?
Whenever you get a massage there's the potential for what's known as a "Healing Crisis". Symptoms of a Healing Crisis can range from the physical responses like muscle soreness, headaches, and fatigue to even strong emotional responses like crying, depression, anger or even uncontrollable laughter! A good way to prevent or decrease a Healing Crisis is to make sure that you are HYDRATED, and to make sure that you have a safe space to recover. If symptoms last longer than 24 hours, please contact your physician or shoot us an e-mail.

What is Shiatsu?
You can find more information about each of the services we offer on our Services page! The best basic explanation that I can give you is that Shiatsu is a Japanese massage modality and alternative medicine that believes that the symptoms of imbalance within our bodies are caused by a blockage within the energy meridians that flow throughout in a cyclical fashion. These meridians are ruled by our visceral organs, each with associated elements, colors, seasons, and manifestations. Blockages in a meridian can cause the organ from which it stems to become too full (Jitsu), and the organ to which it flows to become to empty (Kyo). A Shiatsu Practitioner positions the body in various ways and uses pressure along these various meridians to clear the blockage and allow Chi/Qi to flow naturally again.
Eastern massage modalities are very different than Western massage modalities, so this may be something new and interesting for you to try!
If you book a Shiatsu session,
please wear loose and comfortable clothing (without sequins, beads, etc.) and remove any jewelry or hair accessories. A good outfit is a T-Shirt and Yoga Pants or similar. Think about what you might wear when working out/going to the gym.

There's this really cool Massage service I want you to try. Can you try it on me?
Most massage modalities require specific certification on top of Massage Therapy Licensure to practice. If you're interested in a particular modality which requires certification, please let me know and I'll make every effort to become certified in the modality. However, modality certification ranges from $100 to over $20,000 and requires between 1 week and 2 years to become certified. I'm always eager to learn what's feasible and what there's a demand for! I can incorporate certain techniques I've learned into any of the services I provide, but I can't legally provide a full session of a massage service that I'm not certified to practice, nor can I make any claim that the technique(s) will be effective. In addition, I'll only ever perform massage in a way that seems safe and ethical.

Do you offer Pregnancy Massage?
Due to equipment limitations, at this time, I don't offer Pregnancy Massage. However, I do plan on eventually offering Pregnancy Massage, once I've acquired the appropriate equipment.
With Prenatal/Pregnancy Massage, comes more contraindications to consider. Pregnancy Massage is contraindicated in the First Trimester due to an increased risk of miscarriage. Reflexology, Aromatherapy Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, and Breast Massage are contraindicated. Certain points along the head, neck, shoulders, and ankles/feet are contraindicated.
Contraindicated conditions include: high-risk pregnancy, pregnancy-induced hypertension, preeclampsia, previous pre-term labor, swelling, high blood pressure, severe headaches, having recently given birth, diabetes, heart disease, chronic hypertension, previous miscarriages, or any drug addictions.
ALWAYS, consult with your doctor prior to receiving Pregnancy Massage.

Do you accept walk-ins?
While I've accepted walk-in appointments in the past, due to an increase in weeks where I am fully booked, I can no longer accept walk-ins. Appointments must be made 24+hours in advance. However, I do offer waitlist services for clients with a completed intake form on file. If someone cancels or reschedules their appointment, I can call/text you and let you know that I have availability.

Do you accommodate clients with a disability?
Our current location is on the ground floor, but there are a few steps outside each entrance, with no ramp. If In-Call service isn't possible for a client with a disability, I'd be happy to provide Out-Call Massage Therapy at a reduced rate. I'll need a secure space, free of clutter, approximately 8'x8', and access to Wi-Fi and a handwashing sink.

Do you massage minors?
My policy on providing Massage Therapy to minors is that the parent/guardian must be present with the minor at all times during the massage and assist the minor in filling out all intake forms. There is an additional waiver and consent form that both the minor and the parent/guardian must sign. I don't currently offer Newborn/Infant Massage.

Last time I got a massage, I paid for Deep Tissue, but the LMT didn't go deep enough! I want MORE PRESSURE!
Most massage therapists will tell you that they will only use as much pressure as both you and the therapist are comfortable working with. While you may want harder pressure, it may not be safe for a therapist to provide deeper pressure. Ultimately, while Deep Tissue Massage can be very beneficial to chronic pain and tension, using too much pressure can cause a muscle to spasm or to become irritated, which is detrimental to healing chronic pain and tension. When pressure is applied to muscle, it's not only applied to the muscle, but also to the underlying structures like bones, nerves, blood vessels, even vital organs! Trust your LMT to know how much pressure, is too much pressure.
Also, understand that there is a difference between
Deep Tissue and Deep Pressure. Deep pressure isn't always required to access the deeper tissues under superficial musculature.
For clients for whom Deep Tissue Massage is indicated, but are uncomfortable with deep pressure,
know that firstly, your comfort level is my top priority. With all massage services that I provide, I always tell clients that if the pressure gets above a 6/10, let me know. This is due to the detrimental effect mentioned previously. Exceeding a 6/10 can cause a muscle to spasm and become irritated. Secondly, know that I've discovered and learned several techniques which help me achieve deeper pressure with minimal discomfort, which I'd love to share with you.

Policies

Please arrive early for intake and expect to leave late.
If you book an hour massage, you receive an hour massage unless you arrive late (some case-by-case exceptions may be made from time to time). If it's your first massage with us, please bookend your appointment with a 30minute window of availability. For follow-up clients, please bookend your appointment with a 15-minute window.
*For example, if your 60-minute massage appointment is for 12:30pm, please arrive at 12-12:15pm for intake and preparation. Your massage will end at 1:30pm at which point the LMT will leave the room to allow you to get dressed and go over re-assessment and a follow-up plan. You can expect to leave around 1:45pm-2pm.
In the case of tardiness for your appointment, the Intake/Followup process will be expedited but not excluded. This may result in you paying for a 60 minute massage, and receiving less than a 60 minute massage.

Cancellations will not be honored less than 24 hours prior to your appointment. (Some exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis from time-to-time.)

Prices are paid upfront and we reserve the right to decide when a refund is honored.

If at any time you feel uncomfortable during a massage, please let the LMT know.

We are a professional Massage Therapy Business. If at any time, a client makes a therapist feel uncomfortable or at risk, we will end the session immediately. A refund may not be honored. Please allow the LMT to securely drape and undrape you and follow any instructions prior to the LMT entering the room.

Some contraindications may prevent us from giving you a massage, or limit the type of massage you can receive. Some conditions require us to get physician's approval before proceeding with any bodywork.
NYS law requires us to be allowed to speak with your physician. If you don't allow us to have contact with your physician, legally, we cannot provide massage therapy.

Regarding vaccinations, NYS policy states that if either the LMT or the client are unvaccinated against COVID-19, both the LMT and the client must wear a mask during treatment. If both the LMT and the client are vaccinated against COVID-19, neither need to wear a mask, unless required by the business. I, Samuel Miller, LMT am fully vaccinated and receive regular boosters against COVID-19, and as the owner, I don't require vaccinated clients to wear a mask. However, I will wear a mask at client request, and I will adhere to NYS policy on providing Massage Therapy to unvaccinated clients. For clarification, if you are both unvaccinated and refuse to wear a mask, we legally cannot provide Massage Therapy.

At the current time and space, we aren't offering massage services in a communal space. That being said, it's entirely your choice whether to leave your cellphone or other noisy devices on. We strongly suggest turning your cellphone off and allow yourself to "Escape and Relax", but it's up to you.

Prices of services are subject to change without notice or financial compensation.

Package Discounts are offered at a reduced rate per massage. Every massage you receive at Swan Massage Oasis counts toward our Loyalty Program.
